Aloo tikki | Potato filling for burgers is today’s recipe. Aloo tikki is a popular snack item in Indian cuisine. And these aloo tikkis can be used for burgers as well. These days we get aloo tikki at supermarkets, in ready to fry form in packets. But, it’s very easy to make aloo tikkis at home and children of course love to snack on them. It’s healthy and filling for them. Served with homemade green chutneys or ketchup, they can be served with tea as evening snacks! The recipe here, uses rice flour which makes the tikkis the crispiest. You may use cornflour as well. Also, one may add chopped fresh coriander leaves. But I wanted the tikkis to be tasty yet the simplest!

Time required to make Aloo tikki | Potato filling for burgers: 30 minutes

Ingredients required to make Aloo tikki | Potato filling for burgers (5 tikkis):

  • 3 big potatoes – cut into halves
  • 1 tsp garlic, ginger, red dry chilli paste
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Chaat masala
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 lemon wedge
  • 1 tbsp of rice powder
  • Cooking oil

  • Pressure cook the peeled off potatoes until they are mashable (for me it’s usually 12 whistles)
  • Drain water completely. Mash the potatoes completely with hand or masher
  • Add Salt, ginger garlic paste, Chaat masala, cumin powder, lemon juice, rice flour. Mix well altogether
  • The mixture should be mashed and no lumps should be present
  • With hand form 5 balls out of mashed potatoes. Flatten the balls with your hand. They should look like flattened cylindrical tikkis
  • Keep aside for sometime in the refrigerator. May be 30 minutes (Skip this if you are running short of time)
  • In a non-stick kadai, heat enough oil to just submerge the tikkis
  • While smoking hot, drop the tikkis in the heated oil. Let one side get fried properly so that it turns golden brown. Turn upside down. Fry the other surface. You may press the tikkis a bit even if the tikkis scatter their shape! It ensures uniform cooking
  • Once golden brown on both surfaces, take them out and place on plates
