Though I have cooked Mourala machh in this way, similar recipe can be used to cook any small fish which are primarily of fresh water. This recipe is extremely simple and enjoyed on a mundane day in bengali households. Gang mourala, is extremely healthy since they have high phosphorus content.

Ingredients required to cook Gang mourala recipe | Mourala machher jhol:

  • Gang mourala fish – 200 gms
  • 1 brinjal – cut into thin long strips
  • 1/2 potato – cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 onion – thinly sliced
  • 3 – 4 green chillies
  • 1 tsp kalonji / kalo jeera
  • turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Mustard oil
  • Paste of 1 tsp cumin and coriander powder each (optional)

Gang mourala recipe | Mourala machher jhol recipe – the method:

  • Wash gang mourala fish thoroughly in water as they may bear mud and dirts on their surface
  • Marinate the fishes with turmeric powder and salt for 10 minutes
  • Heat mustard oil in a pan. Here any oil may serve the purpose but cooking with mustard oil imparts a wonderful flavor to the whole dish
  • As smoke starts to come out of the pan, drop in marinated fishes in batches and fry them till they are golden on each sides. A shallow fry is intended here. Keep the fried fish aside
  • Golden fry the potato cubes and keep aside
  • In the remaining oil, put some kalonji or onion seeds and wait for 30 seconds
  • Drop in some thinly sliced onions and fry them till reddish brown
  • Add the brinjal slices and fry them till they are golden on all sides and are partially cooked. On the other hand you can actually fry the brinjals separately. But that would consume more oil than the former method. So I prefer going this way
  • Add fried potatoes and stir well
  • Make a paste of coriander and cumin powder with water leftover from marination and add it in oil and let oil release from the sides of the pan (optional)
  • Add water and bring it to a boil
  • Add the fried fishes and salt as per taste
  • Add green chillies (whole and a lot if you like them :)). Cover pan with lid and simmer
  • Once the jhol or gravy comes to your desired consistency, switch off gas

Your Gang mourala machher jhol is ready to be served. You can serve it with a plate full of piping hot rice! Enjoy your meal now………
